OPEN STUDIO TAKUMI 匠 – EXPLORING MIXED MEDIA ART! COMING SOON!

For artisans in Japan to merge clay and other natural materials into a mixed-media artwork goes back a long way, perhaps 1000 years or more. It is deeply rooted in the art forms of Ikebana and Cha No Yu, expressing a natural, Zen-esque aesthetics that brings out the best of the materials and the artist.

Mixed-media sculpture (detail) by Simon Keller, 2012/13. Coarse local proto-clay with impurities, kaolin slip, natural wood ash glaze splashes and desert stone, oxidation firing at 2318ºF (1270ºC).

This workshop explores the infinite possibilities of a wholesome materials-focusing approach that enhances their shape, texture, inherent properties and, of course, our imagination. In this sense you will be entirely free in your imaginative-creative power while challenging the diverse

conditions that are natural part of the materials. The world of opposites, static and changing materials (clay shrinks, a rock remains a rock in size and shape), randomly collected materials of no obvious connection that merge into a intentionally created form, complex material properties and a tranquil, meditative work process… experience a different kind of clay art workshop.

Random natural materials, sticks, shells, stones and more, or fragments of man-made materials (glass, metal, brick and more) will be incorporated into a clay vessel. We will explore throwing, sculpting and hand-building techniques to create the body. Carving, scraping, faceting and surface washing techniques will help enhance its structure.

The Open Studio will provide stoneware clay, natural wood ash glaze and other ceramic materials such as slips and oxides. This workshop is designed and instructed by the artist in residence, Simon Keller.
